James Gunn Says He Didn’t Fire Henry Cavill From DC

During the presentation of DC ‘s new projects in cinema and TV , James Gunn commented on the controversial departure of Henry Cavill from the studio.
According to the executive, his and Peter Safran ‘s management was not responsible for what happened:
“We didn’t fire Henry. He was never cast. He made a cameo [in Black Adam] and that’s the end of the story. Many people have made assumptions that are not true. For me, it’s about who I want to cast as Superman and who the filmmakers want to cast.”
Gunn also explained why the actor, who played the character in films like Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), is not the ideal choice for Superman: Legacy , the character’s next film:
“For me, for this story, [the best choice] is not Henry. I like him, he’s an amazing guy. I think he was put in a tough spot by a lot of people, including those who ran this company before. But this Superman is not ideal for Henry for several reasons.”
2022 was known to have a real back and forth between Cavill and DC. In October, the actor confirmed that he would return to the role of Superman , after a period without news of the character. At the end of the same month, Cavill said that he would leave the cast of The Witcher , in which he played the protagonist.
However, in December, DC announced the reboot of Superman in theaters and Cavill said goodbye to the role , stating that he was doing so after being “encouraged” to confirm his own return. Despite the changes, he is not expected to return to the role of Geralt in The Witcher , but will make a Warhammer adaptation on Amazon .
Meanwhile, the movie Superman: Legacy is set for release on July 11, 2025.
