The Princess of Montpensier

The Princess of Montpensier
For a long time, kings all across the world have used their daughters for political gains by marrying them off against their will to foreign rulers in order to maintain peace between two countries. The film in question also traverses a similar path and is based on the life of heiress Marie (Mélanie Thierry) whose father wants her to marry a high-ranking soldier of his choice. Being in love with someone else, Marie opposes this marriage, but her words fall on deaf ears and she soon finds herself married to the man her father has chosen for her. As the war starts to engulf the political landscape of France, Marie plans her own war in the bedroom. Solid performances and strong writing make this film an important watch which focuses on the plight of women in a world ruled by men and their desires.
Heartland

Heartland
A rather interesting take on homosexual relationships, ‘Heartland’ is a film directed by Maura Anderson which starts Velinda Godfrey and Beth Grant in leading roles. The central character of the film is a woman called Lauren (Godfrey), who is an artist left completely broken after the death of her girlfriend. Having spent most of her time taking care of her lover in the last four months, she has fallen behind on rent and finds herself homeless soon enough. Though her homophobic mother turns her down, Lauren finds some solace in her brother and his girlfriend Carrie (Laura Spencer), who let Lauren design some logos for the winery they are planning to set up. Things completely fall apart when Lauren and Carrie develop romantic feelings for each other and get sexually involved. Their dysfunctional family soon goes down a rabbit hole of chaos when this comes to light. The director presents the points of view of each of her characters without any bias, and thus all of them becomes strong enough to be remembered.
Venus In Fur

Venus In Fur
‘Venus In Fur’ is actually a novel written by Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, and based on the novel, American David Ives wrote a play of the same name which centres around a director who is about to stage his adaptation of the novel. This play by Ives is the inspiration behind this Roman Polanski directorial in question. The central character of the film is a director called Thomas Novacheck who is about to stage ‘Venus In Fur’ for the first time. We meet him for the first time in a theatre in Paris where he is auditioning actresses for the lead character. An entire day goes by without Thomas coming across one single performer who has the talents to pull off such a challenging role. This is exactly when he comes across an actress called Vanda. With her magnetic stage presence and charisma, she manages to catch the spirit of the character from the first reading itself, and this convinces Thomas that she will be perfect for the role.
The Duchess of Langeais

The Duchess of Langeais
If you love plot-driven movies then there isn’t much in here or rather the plot isn’t what makes the film worth watching. It is rather the encounters between two characters who are kind of happy keeping their feelings kind of bottle up. These characters are the French general Armand de Montriveau and the socialite Antoinette le Langeais. Antoinette is currently a nun. Armand one day decides to talk to Antoinette whom he believes to be the woman he was deeply in love with many years ago. After he gets in contact with her the viewers are shown the past life of these two individuals. Antoinette was once fascinated by the French soldier even though she was married. The feelings were much in tandem with Armand who wanted Antoinette to be his lover. They had various encounters in which they grew closer but things became much more complicated. Did it become too much for them to handle?
No Strings Attached

No Strings Attached
A romantic comedy starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, ‘No Strings Attached’ is the story of Adam and Emma who meet 15 years after they last saw each other at a summer camp. Since then, a lot has changed in the lives of both these characters. While Emma works as a medical resident, Adam is on the outskirts of the entertainment industry, trying to make it big as a writer. Adam is in quite a bad mental state when he meets Emma as he has just found out that one of his former girlfriends has now begun living with his own father. When Emma proposes that they might get into a relationship for their sexual needs alone, without adding any romantic connotations to what they are about to share, we find Adam readily agreeing to the same. However, things naturally do not go according to plan. The dialogues are nice, and the performances of the two lead actors are well-balanced. However, the film truly does not have much to offer beyond that. There was a chance of exploring the interesting drama between Adam and his father, but that is mostly left untouched.
Four Lovers

Four Lovers
This film questions modern relationships and the terms and conditions we tend to generally label our romantic affiliations with in most cases. The plot revolves around two couples- Rachel and Franck, and Vincent and Teri. When Rachel and Vincent meet for the first time professionally, she ends up inviting Franck and his wife Teri to dinner at her house While sexual chemistry develops between Franck and Teri, Rachel and Vincent are not far behind as well. Both couples decide that they would not put any rules or boundaries to what they share and would just enjoy themselves. However, it is not as easy as it sounds. The human heart does not always run on reason or logic, and all four of these characters realize that it is quite difficult to maintain what they have signed up for. The film is rather well-shot, but it must be said that except complicating affairs both for his characters and the viewers, director Antony Cordier fails to give a new dimension to open relationships.
XX/XY

XX/XY
This 2002 romantic drama film explores the dynamics of a three-way romantic and sexual relationship between Coles (Mark Ruffalo), an animator, and college-goers Sam (Maya Stange) and Thea (Kathleen Robertson). The three of them meet at a party for the first time and soon hit it off together. As they head down a rabbit hole of desire and lust, a relationship develops between Coles and Sam which is not taken warmly by Thea. When she begins to create a tension between the three of them, they fall apart and do not meet for eight long years. Finally, when they do meet, Sam is married and Coles has been living with his girlfriend for five years. They forget their commitments and the three of them once again enter an illicit relationship that might have grave consequences on their individual romantic pursuits. This film tries to explore the boundaries of socially certified relationships with its characters who are more guided by their instincts and desires than they are by their morality. Ruffalo’s performance is one of the best aspects of the film.

Look, I will admit I have never looked at Maggie Gyllenhaal in a such a way as this movie made me do. I mean, she is a good actress and has given some great performances but when I watched this movie, I was like damn! She is hot. How could I have missed that angle? Anyways, let’s move on from my pervy life and talk about the plot. Maggie plays the role of Lee Holloway a girl who was admitted to a mental hospital for self-mutilation. She is out now and does secretarial training to find a job. She does manage to get a nice job but her boss, Edward played by James Spader, is kinda different. He has a submissive sexual fetish. Lee wanting some excitement in her life does what her boss tells her to do and is now into a love triangle including her boyfriend and her boss.
Young And Beautiful

Young And Beautiful
This 2013 film is the story of a 17-year-old girl called Isabelle who casually loses her virginity to a boy during her summer holidays at school and then ends up becoming a prostitute for some easy money. Isabelle takes on the name Lea and gets a lot of customers who pay her handsomely for her services. Her favourite client is Georges (Johan Leysen), a 63-year-old man who becomes one of the regulars. It so happens that while having sex one day, Georges dies due to heart failure, and Isabelle’s cover completely blows up. She is grounded by her mother but does not face any criminal charges owing to the fact that she is a minor. Isabelle, however, cannot forgive herself for what happened to Georges and keeps lamenting for the consequences of her actions. One day when she finds out that Georges’ widow had sent her a message on the number she kept for her business contacts, Isabelle decides to meet the woman. The film wonderfully brings out the inexperience of the leading character which drives her towards taking many steps that decide the fate of the other characters. Wonderful performances and rather raunchy sex scenes are other interesting aspects of the film.
A Teacher

A Teacher
An independent film which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, ‘A Teacher’ revolves around the story of Diana Watts, an English teacher who has developed a romantic attachment with one of her students, Eric. Though both of them are sexually rather active, Eric does not treat their relationship as seriously as Diana. When a few minor incidents almost lead to the pair getting caught in the act, Diana realizes she needs to call this relationship off. Because if found, her reputation and her teaching career will soon be over. This distance which she forcefully creates between herself and Eric helps Diana reassess the relationship objectively, and she begins to believe that the distance will make her fall in love with him even more. The film is mostly shot indoors, with the bare minimum use of lights. The light and shadows that we get to see on screen manage to metaphorically capture the thoughts and emotions Diana is going through as the story progresses. Moreover, the sex scenes are rather aesthetically shot despite there being ample skin show.
Tom Of Finland

Tom Of Finland
A biopic centring around the life of Touko Laaksonen, ‘Tom Of Finland’ takes its name from the pseudonym used by its central figure. Laaksonen was a homoerotic artist who became a rather influential name during his lifetime because of its artwork. Laaksonen started painting after having returned from World War II, and his homoerotic drawings soon began to capture the imagination of the post-war gay society of Helsinki. The film also shows us how his art ostracized Laaksonen from his family and the Finnish society as well. The film was rather well-received, mainly because of the way it captures the complexities of the life of its protagonist and the many ups and downs that he had to go through.
Boys

Boys
A Dutch TV movie, ‘Boys’, or as it is originally known, ‘Jongens’ is the story of the sexual awakening of a teenager and captures wonderfully how this period of time in a person’s life can be utterly confusing and at times rather sweet. The central character of the film is a boy called Sieger. This 15-year-old has joined an athletics team with which he will practice, and later take part in the national relay championships. It is here that he comes across another boy called Marc and falls in love with him. Though at first, he thinks this is a one-way liking, Sieger soon discovers that Marc loves him as well. As the two of them come closer, Sieger’s feelings get complicated when he finds himself attracted to a girl as well. The film parallelly deals with the family life as well as personal sexual qualms of a coming-of-age teenager. With strong performances and impressive writing, ‘Boys’ is one of the best R-rated movies you can watch on Hulu.
Marguerite & Julien

Marguerite & Julien
This 2015 French film is a modern rendition of true events which took place in the 17th century involving the two eponymous characters. Marguerite and Julien were the children of a French nobleman who were quite close as they were growing up. When the two children continued their deep bond well into adolescence, their parents and people living in their house began wondering whether their relationship has turned sexual. This film takes this historical context and tells the tale in a modern setup. Interestingly enough, the screenplay on which this film is based was written by screenwriter Jean Gruault who wanted to make the film with none other than Francois Truffaut. Despite such glorious connections, the film falls flat on its face mainly because of poor execution and an inconsistent style that becomes quite difficult to follow throughout the length of the film.
Professor Marston And The Wonder Women

Professor Marston And The Wonder Women
If watching the new DC film starring Gal Gadot has resurged your interest in the character of Wonder Woman, you must check out this film. This 2017 film is a rather interesting account of the life of a psychologist called William Moulton Marston. The creator of Wonder Woman, Marston based the character on the personalities of his wife and his mistress, and this film depicts the process of how the character came to be in the first place. Interestingly enough, Marston’s wife Elizabeth, herself a prominent psychologist, and his mistress Olive both knew each other and were romantically involved as well. After Marston passed away, the two women continued living together. The sex scenes here are more suggestive than explicit, and the way they are presented is far more interesting than the act itself. Moreover, the powerful performances by the three leading actors add a huge amount of authenticity to the complex relationships on display within the film.
Beach Rats

Beach Rats
This sophomore directorial venture of Eliza Hittman is the story of a Brooklyn teenager called Frankie (Harris Dickinson). He is rather aimless in life and spends most of his days simply toying around in his neighbourhood and hanging out with his good-for-nothing friends. Frankie has even managed to find a girlfriend, but he does not take the relationship very seriously. He often takes drugs, and to support this habit, Frankie looks out for gay men and has sex with them for money. It is also established in the film that he is not really a homosexual, and money is the only motivation behind his homosexual encounters. Despite Frankie desperately trying to keep this aspect of his life separate from his other persona with his friends and girlfriend, the task keeps becoming more and more difficult as the days go by. The strong performance by Dickinson goes a long way in helping us empathize with the character and the situation he is in. The restlessness of youth, who wish to leave the comfort of their homes and venture out into the world, is wonderfully captured in ‘Beach Rats’.
