A romantic comedy starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, ‘No Strings Attached’ is the story of Adam and Emma who meet 15 years after they last saw each other at a summer camp. Since then, a lot has changed in the lives of both these characters. While Emma works as a medical resident, Adam is on the outskirts of the entertainment industry, trying to make it big as a writer. The film is rather well-shot, but it must be said that except complicating affairs both for his characters and the viewers, director Antony Cordier fails to give a new dimension to open relationships.

I mean, she is a good actress and has given some great performances but when I watched this movie, I was like damn! She is hot. How could I have missed that angle? Anyways, let’s move on from my pervy life and talk about the plot. Maggie plays the role of Lee Holloway a girl who was admitted to a mental hospital for self-mutilation. She is out now and does secretarial training to find a job. She does manage to get a nice job but her boss, Edward played by James Spader, is kinda different. He has a submissive sexual fetish. Lee wanting some excitement in her life does what her boss tells her to do and is now into a love triangle including her boyfriend and her boss.

Young And Beautiful

This 2013 film is the story of a 17-year-old girl called Isabelle who casually loses her virginity to a boy during her summer holidays at school and then ends up becoming a prostitute for some easy money. Isabelle takes on the name Lea and gets a lot of customers who pay her handsomely for her services. Her favourite client is Georges (Johan Leysen), a 63-year-old man who becomes one of the regulars. It so happens that while having sex one day, Georges dies due to heart failure, and Isabelle’s cover completely blows up. She is grounded by her mother but does not face any criminal charges owing to the fact that she is a minor. Isabelle, however, cannot forgive herself for what happened to Georges and keeps lamenting for the consequences of her actions. One day when she finds out that Georges’ widow had sent her a message on the number she kept for her business contacts, Isabelle decides to meet the woman. The film wonderfully brings out the inexperience of the leading character which drives her towards taking many steps that decide the fate of the other characters. Wonderful performances and rather raunchy sex scenes are other interesting aspects of the film.

An independent film which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, ‘A Teacher’ revolves around the story of Diana Watts, an English teacher who has developed a romantic attachment with one of her students, Eric. Though both of them are sexually rather active, Eric does not treat their relationship as seriously as Diana. When a few minor incidents almost lead to the pair getting caught in the act, Diana realizes she needs to call this relationship off. Because if found, her reputation and her teaching career will soon be over. This distance which she forcefully creates between herself and Eric helps Diana reassess the relationship objectively, and she begins to believe that the distance will make her fall in love with him even more. The film is mostly shot indoors, with the bare minimum use of lights. The light and shadows that we get to see on screen manage to metaphorically capture the thoughts and emotions Diana is going through as the story progresses. Moreover, the sex scenes are rather aesthetically shot despite there being ample skin show.

This 2015 French film is a modern rendition of true events which took place in the 17th century involving the two eponymous characters. Marguerite and Julien were the children of a French nobleman who were quite close as they were growing up. When the two children continued their deep bond well into adolescence, their parents and people living in their house began wondering whether their relationship has turned sexual. This film takes this historical context and tells the tale in a modern setup. Interestingly enough, the screenplay on which this film is based was written by screenwriter Jean Gruault who wanted to make the film with none other than Francois Truffaut. After Marston passed away, the two women continued living together. The sex scenes here are more suggestive than explicit, and the way they are presented is far more interesting than the act itself. This sophomore directorial venture of Eliza Hittman is the story of a Brooklyn teenager called Frankie (Harris Dickinson). He is rather aimless in life and spends most of his days simply toying around in his neighbourhood and hanging out with his good-for-nothing friends. Frankie has even managed to find a girlfriend, but he does not take the relationship very seriously. He often takes drugs, and to support this habit, Frankie looks out for gay men and has sex with them for money. It is also established in the film that he is not really a homosexual, and money is the only motivation behind his homosexual encounters. Despite Frankie desperately trying to keep this aspect of his life separate from his other persona with his friends and girlfriend, the task keeps becoming more and more difficult as the days go by. The strong performance by Dickinson goes a long way in helping us empathize with the character and the situation he is in. The restlessness of youth, who wish to leave the comfort of their homes and venture out into the world, is wonderfully captured in ‘Beach Rats’.
