As he tries to reverse the course of the future progression of history by changing the present, we figure that the threat is closer to home than one may think. Although the story traverses the realm of fantasy, it builds upon the climate anxiety of the present, looking towards a future of melting ice sheets. The ending presumably brings the tale to an overarching conclusion, but as it often happens in alien movies, there may remain a scope of moving the story forward. The Tomorrow War Sequel Release Date
‘The Tomorrow War’ premiered globally on July 2, 2021, on popular streaming platform Amazon Prime Video. Although the film was initially slated for a December 2020 release, the date was postponed due to the pandemic scenario. The producers aim for a theatrical release on July 23, 2021, but they had to cancel yet again because of the anticipated box office collision with ‘Mission: Impossible 7.’ In the meantime, Amazon made a quick move to add the title to their roster.
So, let us explore the possibilities of a sequel. Well, guess what – the director has already expressed his interest in making a sequel. According to the director, the story may be expanded along the lines of time travel, or the sequel may move the story forward with the conquering of the world by white spikes. He wished that Amazon would revive the franchise as it did with the film franchise ‘The Purge,’ reviving it into a web series. So, if not anything, we can at least hope for a series spinoff.
Although the time-travel story may seem overwhelming at times, the film packs a great deal to empty your popcorn bucket. Ghastly aliens, moments of father-daughter bonding, a Christmas theme, the allure of a near-future apocalypse – what more can you ask for? While the film does not deviate from the standard to create something extraordinary, it still proves to be ideal for a family evening. While the critics were dismissive of it, the audiences received the film with much fanfare. With Amazon buying the distribution rights of the movie, the producers managed to get the expenditure back. So, the prospect of a follow-up looks quite bright.
After all, it boils down to the production studio who would make the final call. Popular streaming platforms often wait for a while to see the reaction of the audience before initiating the development of a sequel. And if Amazon indeed revives the franchise by the end of 2021, we expect ‘The Tomorrow War’ to premiere sometime in 2023 or later.
The Tomorrow War Sequel Cast: Who Can Be in It?
All the characters that make their way out of the mayhem alive should reprise their roles in the sequel in all likelihood. If that is the case, we may see Chris Pratt as our war veteran hero Dan Forester, and J.K. Simmons of ‘Whiplash’ fame may return to essay the role of Dan’s father James Forester. In other roles, we may expect Betty Gilpin (Emmy Forester), Sam Richardson (Charlie), and Yvonne Strahovski as the elder-self of Dan’s daughter Muri. If, however, the director seeks to tell standalone stories set in the same universe, the cast ensemble would have to be readjusted accordingly.
The Tomorrow War Sequel Plot: What Can it be about?
The movie begins with a group of future soldiers descending on earth, unveiling a horrific future of mankind. Thirty years into the future, whitespikes have ravaged the earth, and the present government decides to conscript civilians of today to fight the war of tomorrow. The survival rate is low, and the world is on the brink of extinction. Enter time travel paradox – can the course of the future be changed? Apparently, it can, and the hero rises to the occasion to save his daughter from the dreadful future. In the end, the apocalypse is seemingly averted.
Now, what if the future really is not saved from collapse? The question lingers on the mind of the viewer for quite sometime after the movie, and the director may build the sequel around the question. Although the heroes destroy the frozen alien spaceship at the last moment, there remains a possibility of there being other spaceships hidden beneath the ice. Going by the universe of the film, we would not really know before the year 2048 whether the aliens take control. Alternatively, the sequel can probe into the future timeline, unfolding the narrative from the perspective of Dan’s daughter. As mentioned above, the director can also insert separate story arcs in the same universe, which would make things all the more interesting.
