Irene York, played by Sissy Spacek, said at one point in the first trailer for the upcoming Prime Video series Night Sky, “I have to see where this is all going.” she says. This sentence can be both metaphorical and literal, as a retired English teacher in declining health sees her life with her husband, Franklin (JK Simmons), increasingly revolve around visits to a mysterious room buried in their backyard.
The series, starring two Oscar-winning names, was previously known as Lightyears. Spanning space and time, Night Sky follows Irene and Franklin, who many years ago inexplicably discover a room that leads to a strange, desolate planet. They’ve been diligently guarding their secret ever since, however, when a mysterious young man (Chai Hansen) walks into their lives, the Yorks’ quiet existence is quickly turned upside down and it turns out there’s more to the room they thought they knew too well.
The series, produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, also stars Kiah McKirnan, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández and Adam Bartley. A year ago, Simmons replaced Ed O’Neill, who originally played the role. Night Sky is created and executive produced by Holden Miller, with Daniel C. Connolly serving as showrunner and executive producer. Jimmy Miller, Sam Hansen, and Philip Martin also serve as executive producers. The eight-episode first season will air worldwide on Prime Video on Friday, May 20.
